Following the purchase of a Great War book owned by author and veteran Henry Williamson, we explore something of Williamson’s life, the Writing Hut where he crafted his work and look at what the book was, and how it connects is to the battlefields of the Great War.

  1. Looking forward to this. Only recently spent time in Devon and managed to get to visit his grave in Georgeham churchyard. Sadly I hadn’t heard of his writing hut at the time.

  4. It’s 0530, dark, raining and I have 250 miles ahead. As I start the car my phone connects to the radio and starts a new episode of the Old Front Line, and once again it’s a great one. You often talk about the writers and characters who influenced you, but don’t forget you have become the same for an awful lot of people – always guiding us in the right direction. Thank you!

  5. I have just watched an interview with Henry Williamson found on BBC i player – no. 3 in a series of Great War Interviews. He mentions the Christmas Truce and the brass box he received – these can still be found at Antique Fairs in Britain. It is surprising to hear him using the words ‘pic nic’ and ‘great fun.’

  7. Another fascinating episode. Only really knew Henry Williamson from Tarka The Otter and had previously visited his grave in Devon. Didn’t realise he had written so much set during the Great War so will endeavour to get some more of his work.

  10. Fascinating account of a complex man. The wood cuts in Patriots Progress look great. It’s good to see many reasonably priced copies available online.
