The Pillboxes of Flanders

Concrete bunkers – pillboxes – are an iconic symbol of the Great War, and in this episode we look at the book ‘The Pillboxes of Flanders’ published in the 1930s, examine their history and use, and then visit some of the surviving examples of bunkers around Ypres.

  1. Great podcast again. Am triggered by the story about the discovery of British concrete, delivered to the Germans through The Netherlands. Surely want to look in to that. It is becoming clearer and clearer to me that “neutrality” had a very specific meaning to “us” in those days.

  2. Another excellent podcast with some troubling observations about Dutch “neutrality”. Maybe they hadn’t quite forgiven us for waging war against their kinsman twelve years before. Thurlow’s book is available via N&M press as one of their reprints for £5.59.
