WW1 Podcast with Paul Reed
In this Trench Chat, we are joined by Roger Steward who works as a Battlefield Guide in Flanders, and is the author of an excellent book on Langemarck German Cemetery and a new one ‘Reclaiming the Salient’ about the battlefields around Ypres in the years following WW1. We look at the problems of the ‘Iron Harvest’, the recovery of the dead, and modern battlefield archaeology.

Very informative episode. The repatriation of over 80,000 remains of American soldiers was highly controversial Our country church cemetery is the final resting place of Martin Erickson—our county’s first KIA in 1918.

Thanks for a fascinating and at times macabre podcast. Also revealing the very worst of human nature, e.g the offers to wealthy looking pilgrims to secretly remove the bodies of their loved ones and con men turning up at war widow’s front doors under false pretences. Were any of these brought to account? The books look good too, especially the one on Langemark.

On a tour I was guided into a farmer’s machinery shed where a table was covered in old ordinance- I was handed a Mills bomb with no thought of its potential to still be live – this podcast got me thinking – thanks for another great listen & learn.

A superb podcast – I’m looking forward to reading the Salient book which is such an interesting subject; my great grandfather served in the Salient and luckily survived the war winning the MM at the battle of Estaires in April 1918.
