  1. Thanks for great interview/ discussion with Mike. I live in a very rural county in the Upper Midwest We had 52 county men that died during the Great War. 75% died from the Flu or other diseases. One was KIA a half hour before the Armistice

      • Carl Nelson, born 1893, was working on a farm in Trempealeau County prior to his service. He was in Co K, 356th Infantry in the Meuse. A half hour before the Armistice. Carl, along with a small detachment of men led by a Lieutenant, attacked a line of Germans. ( for some unknown reason). Carl was shot and killed. His body was returned to Wisconsin in 1921 and he buried at Kings Valley Lutheran Church near Osseo. His brother Ben was wounded during the war and died of gangrene. The American Legion Post in Osseo is named for poor Carl. He is hard to find records for because his name was also spelled Nilsson and Aalstad at various times. The local Norwegians never seemed to be able to agree on what their surnames were or how they should be spelled.

  2. Excellent podcast. I couldn’t agree more with his views on Bellewarde Amusement Park. I know that some take the opposite view in that they think it disrespectful but I think that it is the best testament to the sacrifices of those who fought there and I agree with Mike that the ghosts of any Tommies still haunting the place will be “cool with it”.

  3. Great Chat. Another quote from a Canadian in Flanders was when the American’s 42nd Infantry Division (Rainbow Division) arrived saying they are here to win the war. The Canadians responded in kind say “Rainbows only show up after the storm”.
