Forgotten Memoirs of the Great War Part 2

We return to the subject of Forgotten Memoirs of the First World War and discuss The Years of Remembrance by Harold Maybury which was published in 1924. Maybury served in the ranks of the 2/4th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment in the 57th (2nd West Lancs) Division, on the Western Front in 1917 and 1918. We ask what the book tells us about the experience of the Great War and what value memoirs like these have to our understanding of the conflict.

  1. I was born in Warrington and although not bred there I spent part of my childhood there and still retain family links in the town. Consequently my interest was piqued more than usual when you introduced the book. It’s a pity that it is so rare and expensive. It would certainly work as N and M Press reprint. Nevertheless I will keep my eyes open for it. It certainly sounds an interesting book.

His post-war comments were quite illuminating as well, alluding to the regenerative power of nature to reclaim the battlefields in the space of a few years.

It is good to see that Lovely Lane is still there and next time I am in town I will aim to visit his grave at Hill Cliffe cemetery.
