In this episode of podcast listeners questions we ask: what Great War items would you take to a Desert Island, how was cause of death accurately reported or not by the military authorities, how did men on the front line get news of other fronts and their own, and were truces to bury the dead common on the Western Front?

  1. An excellent selection of questions and answers. My Desert Island disc choice would be Middlebrook’s First Day of the Somme, The Paths of Glory and a cutting that I have taken from a local Warrington newspaper describing the short life of my Great uncle Stanley Hunt who was killed in April 1918 aged 18,and is buried at Mailly Maillet. As an aside The Light Horseman is available to watch on YouTube.

  3. Great question. My Desert Island disc selection would be “Before Endeavours Fade” by Rose Coombs, the medals and death penny of Edgar Thomas Wescombe, who was killed on the first day of the Somme, and the film would be 2017 version of “Journey’s End.”

  5. Another great Q&A session Paul thanks, I was having a wee giggle, as I asked you that very same question regarding your desert island book on a podcast supporters evening a couple of years back, and the answer was the same ‘Her Privates We’, on your recommendation I bought a second hand copy which was an original copy, I’ve also got it on Kindle and one I dip in and out of often, a truly great book.
