WW1 Podcast with Paul Reed
In their final major battle of the Great War, the 1/4th (Hallamshire) and 1/5th Battalions of the York and Lancaster Regiment made an advance towards the Selle River valley at Haspres. Trench warfare was over and this was a battle in the open. Their dead were buried in the aptly named York Cemetery and in this film we discuss the fighting and visit the cemetery.
BATTLEFIELD MAP:
Thanks for an interesting Vlog Paul. I have always been troubled by the high casualties suffered during this final phase of open warfare. I suppose that the only redeeming features were that we were making serious advances and decisively defeating the main enemy in the main theatre of war.

The casualties were very high, and demonstrated that modern warfare was, and would remain, costly – something still true more than a century later.
