  1. Thanks Paul for an excellent Q and A. I was surprised to hear that an amputee was forced to work. I thought that in some cases, badly wounded soldiers (on both sides) were repatriated through the Red Cross.

    While conditions for British PoWs were grim. It could be worse. Imagine facing a German unit with the same mindset as Lance Cattermole’s?

    In our previous war, ie the Boer War, soldiers did get quite attached to their rifles. For more on this I would recommend the excellent “Carvings from the Veldt”. Youtube channel.
