Despatches: Wings Over Flanders

In this latest Despatches we discuss the passing of author Martin Middlebrook, and look back to another Great War icon, perhaps lesser known, John Giles. John founded the Western Front Association in 1980, wrote a series of books on the Western Front, and in 1982 took what was then a unique flight over the Old Front Line. We look back on that aerial survey and discuss what landscape means to us on the ground and from the air.

  1. Nice one but also tinged with sadness…I too had the pleasure of being a friend of Martin M and I still say that IMHO he changed how military history was presented…..often books before his Frist Day on the Somme were a book written by an officer, for the officers about the officers…..

    • Hi Jon – unfortunately am afraid I can’t resend them individually as it’s automated. You can go onto BMC or Patreon webpages for the Podcast and the link is on there.

  2. Thanks for an excellent podcast Paul. The 1991 edition of Flanders Then and Now, was updated to include the aerial photos that you mentioned. It is part of a boxed set, with his two other books, from Pen and Sword.
