WW1 Podcast with Paul Reed
In the first of some Battlefield Vlogs filmed at Ypres last year we walk the ground from the Frezenberg Ridge via Railway Wood to Hooge. In this first video we look at some private Great War memorials to missing soldiers who fell on the Frezenberg Ridge in 1915.
BATTLEFIELD MAP:
Do the farmers around the old battlefields regularly turn up remains? I would imagine in the spring the earth would heave up remains and artifacts on a regular basis. It must be like farming a cemetery

Hi Nancy – yes, soldier’s remains are found each year but usually during archaeological work rather than by farmers. At Ypres, most of what was on the surface in that respect has been found – outside of wooded areas that is.

I live in Upper Midwest. In the spring as the frost comes out of the ground things come to the surface- best time to hunt arrowheads. I can imagine those fields near old battlefields bringing “things” up for decades. Do they ever use cadaver dogs to find human remains? The dogs are incredible

No, there is no regular search as the whole battlefield area is one vast graveyard really. They don’t use cadaver dogs either.

Thank you Paul. This is the first Vlog of yours that I’ve seen. It is excellent and I can wait to go back and take your Vlogs and podcasts with me.
Well worth a coffee!
