Somme 105th Anniversary
Today is the 105th Anniversary of the First Day of the Battle of the Somme. The battle began on this day at 7.30am when the British soldiers went Over The Top on a perfect summer’s morning. On this anniversary we look at the background to 1st July 1916, visit the Thiepval Memorial, and discuss what the First Day of the Somme means to me, reflecting on the experience of the veterans I interviewed.

Dear Paul,                   I hope all is very well with you and yours. Needless to say that I am enjoying your weekly Pod Casts dropping into my mail box every Saturday.      I have just received the latest, The 105th Anniversary of the The First Day of The Battle of The Somme.Is it me simply being dim, as I am not the sharpest tool in the box at times but I am struggling to click a link to listen to your thoughts and reflections.       I am sure I have missed something but cannot quite see where or what.          Please put me straight. I, like you, will be thinking of Bmdr Herbert Brockett RHA, like Eric Heaton found after the battle and buried in Hawthorn No.1.
Whilst working today I was fortunate to have a Skylark above me. It at least gave me a sense of where I should like to have been.
