Walking The Somme: Fricourt

In this episode, we walk the battlefield at Fricourt on the Somme. It’s a walk very much connected to regiments from Yorkshire who fought here on 1st July 1916: the First Day of the Battle of the Somme. We visit cemeteries, walk across the front lines, discuss a lesser-known war poet, and look at the story of the German dead on the Somme.

Another excellent episode Paul. Well done. Although I have been walking and researching the Western Front since the early 1970s I find there is still something to learn. Your podcasts prove that and an example is that track between Becourt and Fricourt. On my list for next time. Thanks.

Very interesting I think we often forget that the 10th West Yorks were in the 21st Division as you said at Loos and the Somme and got a stuffing at both battles…Indeed this Division had the most casualties of any Division in the war at over 55,000…Remembering and a great area to visit……

A great reminder of my visit to Fricourt during the 100th anniversary walking tour in October 2016. While not wishing to detract from the role of the PBI, it’s good also that Paul gives the Gunners their due.

Hi Paul,

Just re-listened to this podcast as recently discovered a distant cousin of my wife’s was wounded at Fricourt whilst fighting with the 7th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. He died 10 days later and is buried at Etaples.

Your podcasts really help to give a picture of what took place
