We’re excited to launch a new chapter in The Old Front Line podcast with the start of a special series, where we take a deep dive into one subject across several specially curated episodes.
Our first special series takes to the skies with a powerful look at the Air War in the First World War, focusing on the experiences of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and its successor, the Royal Air Force (RAF), over the Western Frontbetween 1914 and 1918.
This in-depth series includes:
- An introductory episode that explores the background, development, and transformation of British air power during the First World War—from the early days of aerial reconnaissance missions to aerial dogfights and the changing nature of the war in the air.
- Expert interviews with two leading historians and authors:
- Andy Saunders, a respected military aviation historian, brings insight into the life and death of Mick Mannock VC DSO MC.
- Josh Levine, author of Fighter Heroes of WW1 and consultant on Dunkirk, discusses the human stories behind the RFC and RAF.
- A special listener Q&A episode, where your questions about the Air War, the pilots, the technology, and life in the skies are answered.
- A concluding episode that explores how the legacy of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force can still be seen in the landscape of the Western Front today—from the site of airfields to memorials and crash sites and burial grounds.
Subscribe now and follow along as we uncover the story of the men who flew in the Great War and those who made it possible on the ground, and those who never came home.

Hi Brett – the Air War is a massive subject so I’ve kept it manageable and this series will be largely about the RFC/RAF. I’ll do something on the RNAS at a later stage.
