WW1 Podcast with Paul Reed
We travel to Ploegsteert (‘Plugstreet’), south of Ypres, to look at the story of the Christmas Truce here in 1914, perhaps one of the most iconic moments of the Great War. Here we discuss a book by WW1 cartoonist Bruce Bairnsfather, the Princess Mary’s Christmas Tin and a group photograph of men who took part in the Truce.
The colourised image of men of the London Rifle Brigade taking part in the Christmas Truce is used with thanks to Doug of Colour History, who I would strongly recommend you follow on Twitter/X.
BATTLEFIELD MAP:
Paul,
Thanks for this. My great uncle, George Henry Sutton, was killed on Christmas Day 1914 whilst he was serving the 1st Battn, Leicestershire Regt. Two members of the Bttn were killed on the day near Bois Grenier. He is commemorated Ploegsteert Memorial.

Thanks for sharing your link to this day – did you see I did an episode on those who died on Christmas Day 1914 a while back?
