There yesterday as part of the battlefield tour. Verdun has held my imagination since reading Alistair Hornes Price of Glory five decades ago. Of the days itinerary Fleury and the walk outside the museum was the highlight. The cratered obliterated village is well marked out. The woods around have a ghostly feel about them. After Auschwitz it is the saddest place I have ever visited A battle fought to so little gain for either side and whose consequences remain with us to this day.
