Changing Landscapes: Canal du Nord

A massive engineering project has been announced for Northern France which will create a new ‘super canal’ linking in with the existing Canal du Nord, the scene of heavy fighting during the Great War, especially in 1917/18. In this episode we will look at the history of the canal, the fighting there and how this project may change the landscape of the Western Front in this region, and what might be found during the work.

  1. A fascinating podcast on an iconic Great War landmark. I hope that the damage caused by the excavation work will be limited as far as possible, although I’m sure that it will yield some interesting battlefield archaeology.

  2. Thanks for the information Paul.
Some of the areas you talk about hold a great deal of personal interest for me.
My grandfather’s Artillery Brigade were at Havrincourt on 27th September 1918, right next to the bridge over the C du N you mention. He mentions it in his diary. Sanders Keep is a favourite of mine too. Also my local connection to 62 Div, whose memorial is in Havrincourt, and another favourite cemetery, Grand Ravine.
    Thanks again.
