WW1 Podcast with Paul Reed
This week we take our first walk across one of the ‘Forgotten Battlefields’ of the Great War, the Boar’s Head close to the village of Richebourg in Northern France. Here we discover the story of the Southdown’s Battalions, or Lowther’s Lambs, and uncover what a terrible sacrifice Sussex made here on 30th June 1916.
Fascinating episode about the battle of Boar’s Head. There is a Boar’s Head golf club and pub near Crowborough- is this named after the battle?

Thanks, Robert. I’m not sure if it is, but it’s possible!

A very moving account. Thank you for rendering the reality of what happened on that day. Two of my grandfather’s nephews (sons of his eldest sister, and the same age is him!) Albert Charles Grenyer SD/1690 and William David Grenyer SD/1691 enlisted with the 12th Sussex and fought in the Battle of the Boar’s Head. Albert was killed on that day and has no known grave, but is commemorated on the Loos memorial at Dud Corner Cemetery. His brother William survived and on 28 August 1916 was awarded the Military Medal.
